About Me

Welcome! My name is Jocelyn Mogavero and I am currently a graduate student at Buffalo State College. I am pursuing a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood and Childhood Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Early Childhood. Previously, I obtained my Bachelor’s Degree from Buffalo State College with a major in Childhood Education and a concentration in Science. Currently, I am working as a substitute teacher for two different school districts in Western New York. I have worked in a variety of jobs that have allowed me, over the years, to work with children aged 6 weeks to 12 years old. Additionally, I previously worked with high school students, helping them complete their required community service hours.

Originally, I was split between going into Civil Engineering or becoming a teacher. Initially, Civil Engineering won and I went to college for three years for it. After three years and a completed co-op, I decided that I am happier and more passionate working with children. I then transferred to Buffalo State College where I was admitted into the Childhood Education program and further developed my love for teaching. However, I still have a strong passion for math and science. I find joy in helping students, specifically female students, find their love for math and science and build those connections in STEM fields.

Since I am a very physical and visual learner, I enjoy learning in a setting that provides many visuals and allows for hands-on learning (I also deeply enjoy crafting). My fondest memories in school, especially science and math, were working with manipulatives and learning through physically “doing”. I hope to develop interesting projects and experiences that enhance student learning through hands-on, minds-on activities. My end goal is to have every student engaged and eager to learn and experience new ways of learning, rather than the traditional ways of direct-instruction.

On a more personal note, last year was quite the year for me. In May, I graduated with my Bachelor’s Degree. Then, in October, I got married! Finally, right before Thanksgiving, I became a Peripheral Blood Stem Cell donor for a 68 year old woman who has Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. It was one of the best years of my life!
